Batch Rename: Free Ableton Live Clip Renaming Extension

BATCH RENAME

Organizational Utility

Batch Rename is a free Ableton Live Extension built around a problem every Live user has lived with: a track full of clips named Clip 1, Clip2, Clip 3 after a long improvisation or bounce session. Right-click a track header and rename every clip on it in one pass, building each name from a shared base, an optional prefix and suffix, and a sequential number. Stuck for names? No stress: just randomize one from scratch.

NAME OF THE GAME

  • Renames every clip on a MIDI or Audio track in one operation, skipping empty slots so the sequential count only advances for clips that actually exist
  • Builds each name from Prefix, Base Name, Suffix, and a sequential number, with Base Name as the only required field
  • Starts numbering from any integer and increments by 1 per clip
  • Zero-pads numbers to a minimum of two digits by default (01, 02, 09, 10), so a track with ten or more clips still sorts correctly; three-digit numbers are never truncated
  • Moves the sequential number before or after the suffix with the Pre-suffix toggle
  • Shows a live preview of the first resulting name as you type, before anything is applied
  • Undoes the entire batch in a single Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Z, regardless of how many clips were touched

The four-field formula (Prefix, Base Name, Suffix, Number) covers the naming conventions people actually use for take management and stem organization, without trying to be a general text-templating tool. Base Name is the one field you can't leave empty, which forces every renamed clip to share at least one piece of identifying text. If you want a name with no shared text at all, the workaround is a single underscore or space as the base, which is a deliberate trade-off: simplicity for the common case over flexibility for the edge case.
