How to configure OSC with Data MIDI & Data Mod

In five easy steps

For use with our Sonification Tools

FAQ

STEP 1: Wi-Fi settings

Enter your computer’s network Wi-Fi settings. The goal is to find your computer’s local network IP address. On macOS 15, pictured right, open Wi-Fi settings and click the Details button.

If your OSC app is running on the same computer as Live, you can skip to Step 4.

STEP 2: IP address

On macOS, select TCP/IP settings at left and note your IP address; leave this open so you can copy it into your preferred OSC application in the following step.

STEP 3: Enter IP address in OSC application

Ensure your OSC application is installed on a device connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer running Live, then enter the IP address from Step 2 in the appropriate field; this example is showing the GyrOSC app available from the App Store here. Note the Target IP address matches the one shown in our previous step.

STEP 4: Set OSC Port number

Enter a valid port number, typically four digits, in the Port field.

If your OSC app is running on the same computer as Live, this would be your first step, as OSC should be sent directly to the localhost IP address by default.

STEP 5: Max for Live set-up

In Data MIDI or Data Mod, select Stream mode, then enter the same port number as your OSC app from Step 4 in the Port field. Then select and type one of your app’s available addresses in the Address field and hit enter. In this case, we’ve entered the first address: /gyrosc/gyro - all symbols and slashes in the address are crucial for connection. Once receiving from an OSC address, you can select an Index: in this case, Index 1 corresponds to the pitch value sent from GyrOSC; Index 2 would be roll, 3 would be yaw.
