Lane Loader: Free Take Lane Extension for Ableton Live

Lane Loader is an Ableton Live Extension that populates a track's Take Lanes from audio or MIDI files dragged in from Finder, or from clips already sitting in your session. Each source lands in its own dedicated Take Lane, so a folder of samples or a handful of comped takes turns into a properly organized, non-destructive lane structure instead of a manual drag-and-drop session. Lane count and the order sources get assigned are both configurable. Try sequential or random file ordering for a fresh approach.

HOCKET IN THE DOCKET

  • Loads audio files (WAV, AIF, AIFF, FLAC, MP3) into Take Lanes on an Audio track, or MIDI files (MID, ALC) into Take Lanes on a MIDI track, dragged directly from Finder or Explorer
  • Loads existing Session or Arrangement clips straight into Take Lanes without re-importing anything, when opened from a multi-clip selection
  • Names each Take Lane automatically after its source file or clip
  • Sets the number of lanes to create with a Lanes counter, automatically capped to however many sources are actually available
  • Assigns sources to lanes in Random mode, drawing a fresh shuffle every time you click Load, or Sequential mode, preserving source order exactly
  • Filters mixed file types automatically: an Audio track only accepts audio formats, a MIDI track only accepts MIDI formats, with unsupported files silently dropped from the set
  • Re-shuffles independently on every Load click in Random mode, so running Load repeatedly from the same file set produces a different lane arrangement each time without re-dropping anything
  • Keeps each Load call additive: previous lanes from an earlier Load are left in place rather than replaced, so stacking multiple loads builds up lane sets you can compare or thin out manually

Whether Lane Loader opens in File mode or Selection mode depends entirely on how you triggered it, not a setting you choose. Right-click a track header and you get a drop zone for files; right-click a multi-clip selection or an Arrangement clip and you get a list of those clips ready to load immediately, no drop required. That distinction matters because the two starting points represent genuinely different moments in a workflow, bringing in fresh material versus reorganizing material you already have, and Lane Loader meets you at whichever one you're actually in.


Random mode's per-click reshuffle is the detail that makes Lane Loader useful for more than just bulk import. Drop a folder of variations once, then hit Load repeatedly to audition different lane arrangements of the same material without touching Finder again. That workflow only holds together because the shuffle is genuinely independent each time, not a single randomization that gets reused.
