Primer is an Ableton Live Extension that builds a complete set template in one click. Right-click any track header and Primer creates a configurable mix of MIDI and Audio tracks, fills each with a randomly selected instrument or effects chain, randomises every device parameter to whatever degree you choose, and can optionally land the project on a random tempo. Use it to escape a blank session instantly, or as a generative starting point when you want raw material to react against rather than build from nothing.

FULL SESSION GENERATOR

  • Creates up to 8 MIDI tracks and 8 Audio tracks per generation, configured independently
  • Gives the first MIDI track a Drum Rack automatically, with every subsequent MIDI track receiving a randomly selected instrument
  • Loads each Audio track, and each return track, with a random selection of effects within a configurable Min/Max count
  • Randomises every device parameter by a Deviation amount from 0% (factory defaults) to 100% (full-range unpredictability)
  • Accepts your own WAV, AIF, or AIFF samples dropped from Finder or Explorer, allocating the first 16 to Drum Rack pads and any beyond that to Simpler and Sampler instances elsewhere
  • Optionally randomises project tempo within a Min/Max BPM range, and optionally adds a non-randomised Limiter to the Master track as a safety ceiling
  • Sets every new track's fader to a configurable level immediately, so a freshly randomised session has usable headroom instead of clipping out of the gate
  • Preserve mode adds the new tracks alongside whatever's already in the session
  • Clear mode deletes every existing MIDI and Audio track before generating, with return tracks always kept regardless of mode
  • Clear mode's deletion cannot be undone with Cmd+Z or Ctrl+Z; recovering from it requires closing without saving and reopening the last saved version of the project

Deviation is the one control that determines whether a Primer pass produces something playable or something purely exploratory. At 50%, the default, parameters drift around their factory settings closely enough that results are usually still musically recognisable. At 100%, every parameter lands wherever the random roll sends it, full unpredictability with no guardrail. Choosing where to sit on that range is really choosing whether you want Primer to hand you a usable starting point or a deliberately broken one to react against.
