Pulse Engine is a generative Max for Live MIDI effect designed by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred to create expressive rhythmic and melodic output from even the simplest ideas. Reshape incoming notes into evolving pulse clusters or produce them entirely on its own, enhancing existing MIDI or generating fresh ideas from scratch.

Each generated cluster of pulses can shift pitch, velocity, length, and timing within musical bounds, producing ornamentation, fills, and dynamic gestures that stay locked to your project’s scale and groove.

Add intricate detail that would be tedious to program and impossible to play: rolls that grow or taper, melodic flourishes that follow harmonic progressions, continuously shifting rhythms, or interstitial ear candy that fills the space between phrases.

Playback modes determine how it behaves in context—running independently as a generator, reacting only while notes are held, weaving pulses between notes, or adding movement during gaps. A clear visual display shows how incoming MIDI is transformed, supporting fast decisions in both writing and performance.

Version 2 expands creative control with new decay behaviors for pitch, velocity, and length; ranged rate modes with Flip for directional shaping; refined pitch and velocity randomization; density to control how busy each cluster can be; and global swing awareness for tighter integration with Live 12. These updates make it easier to produce repeatable, expressive shapes and structured variation that remain musical and intentional.
