Segmenter: Clip Splitting Extension for Ableton Live

SEGMENTER

Clip Subdivision Tool

Segmenter is an Ableton Live Extension that splits a single MIDI or Audio clip into consecutive bar-length segments with. even remainders. Choose a segment length and Segmenter tiles the clip into that many bars per chunk, writing each chunk out as its own new clip while leaving the original completely untouched. It's a building-block tool: break a long clip down into pieces sized for rearranging, layering, or running through oother Extensions, with a live preview showing exactly how the breakdown will land before you commit to it.

INSTANT CLIP TILING

  • Splits any MIDI or Audio clip into segments of a chosen bar length, with the source left untouched and every segment inheriting its name and colour with a sequence number appended
  • Clamps the maximum Segment value to half the clip's length, rounded up, which guarantees at least two segments are always produced from any eligible clip
  • Tiles the clip exactly, every segment matches the chosen length except the final one, which absorbs whatever remainder is left over and is never padded out to match
  • Shows a live Summary line (source length and type, how many clips will result) and a Preview line (the exact bar breakdown, e.g. "3/3/2 bars") that both update as you adjust Segment
  • Collapses long previews into a first-segment/ellipsis/last-segment display when the full breakdown won't fit on one line, while keeping the numbers that actually matter visible

The decision to never pad the final segment is the one rule worth internalizing before using Segmenter on anything but perfectly divisible clip lengths. An 8-bar clip at Segment 3 doesn't produce three padded 3-bar clips, it produces 3, 3, and 2, an honest reflection of how the source actually divides rather than a tidier number that would require inventing content to fill the gap. The live preview exists specifically so that arithmetic is visible before you generate, not something you have to work out afterward by looking at the results.

The Session-versus-Arrangement asymmetry between MIDI and Audio isn't an arbitrary restriction, it's a direct consequence of what Audio rendering actually requires. MIDI notes are just data with timestamps, easy to slice and rebase regardless of where the clip lives. Audio segmentation has to render real sample content from a specific point on a timeline, and a Session clip simply doesn't have a timeline position to render from. The guidance message exists to explain that constraint in the moment, rather than leaving you to figure out why the menu item won't open.

AUDIO CLIP CONSTRAINTS

  • Requires Audio clips to be in Arrangement view, since segmenting an Audio clip means rendering each bar range from a fixed timeline position, something Session clips don't have
  • Shows a guidance message instead of opening the dialog for any Audio clip still sitting in Session View, or for any clip under 2 bars regardless of type
  • Allows MIDI clips to be segmented from either Session or Arrangement view, since MIDI segmentation works directly on note data rather than requiring a timeline render
  • Flattens Audio segments into rendered, warped, and looping clips rather than transferring the original warp marker positions as separate editable markers, a current SDK limitation
  • Copies every MIDI note property (pitch, velocity, mute state, probability, velocity deviation, release velocity, selection state) verbatim into the appropriate segment, rebasing and truncating any note that crosses a segment boundary
