Transit is an Ableton Live Extension that applies time-windowed variations to existing Arrangement View MIDI clips. It divides the clip into a series of interval sections, and at the end of each one carves out a brief transition window where notes get independently randomized as per your settings, with pitch, velocity, length, timing, octave, probability, activation, and repetition all available. The bulk of each interval keeps the original material exactly intact; changes only occur within your specified transition windows. The result is a sequence of dynamic interjections to otherwise repetitive clips.



MULTIPLE WINDOWING SETTINGS

  • Divides the source clip at every Transition Bars boundary, producing one non-transition clip and one transition clip per interval, all replacing the original in a single undo step
  • Preserves the non-transition clip's notes exactly, with looping re-enabled and original loop settings intact, never randomised
  • Carves the transition clip from the end of each interval at a length set by Beats, extracting notes from the correct phase position in the source loop before randomising them independently
  • References the original source material for every transition, never cascading from one transition to the next, so a transition at bar 64 starts from exactly the same baseline as one at bar 8
  • Adds a random semitone shift with Pitch, and a separate whole-octave displacement with Octave, the two compounding independently when both fire on the same note
  • Shifts note start time earlier or later in Rate-grid steps with Offset, and adds extra copies of a note at subsequent Rate-grid steps with Repeats
  • Scales note duration with Length, and adds a random velocity offset with Velocity, both confined to the transition window
  • Assigns a fresh Live per-note play probability with Probability, distinct from the generation-time Chance gate that decides whether a mutation fires at all
  • Toggles mute state with Activation, the one parameter with no Min/Max since a mute toggle has nothing to range over, only a firing Chance

Probability and Chance look related but answer entirely different questions, and it's worth being precise about the distinction. Chance is a generation-time decision: does this note get a mutation applied at all when Transit processes the clip. Probability is a property written into the resulting note: the chance that note actually sounds on any given loop pass once the clip is playing back. One happens once, when you click Apply; the other happens every single time the clip loops afterward.


That non-cascading detail is the part most worth understanding before using Transit on a long arrangement, because it determines whether mutation compounds or stays consistent over time. Each transition clip runs its own fresh randomisation pass against the unmutated source, with the same Min/Max/Chance settings applied each time but a different random outcome. That means a transition late in a long clip is just as close to the source character as one early on, deliberately, so a long arrangement doesn't drift progressively further from itself the way a cascading system would.

Relative and Absolute interval modes exist because "where do the transitions land" is a question with two genuinely different correct answers depending on context. Relative counts from the clip's own start, which is what you want when a clip's internal structure should drive its own transitions regardless of arrangement position. Absolute locks to the global bar grid instead, which matters the moment you have multiple clips across different tracks that need to transition together at the same arrangement positions, since Relative mode on two clips starting at different bars would never align. Lattice's Intersect mode deliberately mirrors this same Bars-and-Beats transition-window language, so the mental model transfers directly between the two Extensions.


DRUMS MODE

  • Restricts Pitch's Max range to 0–5 semitones and forces Octave Chance to 0% the moment Drums mode is active
  • Restores whatever Pitch and Octave Chance values were set before switching, the moment you switch back to Notes mode
  • Exists because a drum rack maps different pitches to entirely different sounds, so a wide pitch or octave randomisation that's musically reasonable on a melodic clip would trigger unrelated, unintended drum hits

Drums mode is a genuinely different intent rather than a cosmetic preset, which is why it's a binary toggle rather than just lower default ranges you could set yourself. On a melodic clip, a pitch mutation reaching ±48 semitones still produces the same instrument playing a different note. On a drum rack, the equivalent reach means the kick pattern might suddenly include hi-hat triggers, a structurally different kind of mistake that the mode exists specifically to prevent.
