Variform is an Ableton Live Extension that applies controlled randomization to the device parameters already loaded on a MIDI or Audio track. Every top-level device on the track is listed individually, and you decide which devices participate, which parameter categories stay protected, and how far values are allowed to drift from where they currently sit. Click Randomize and every selected parameter an each selected device updates at once.

MULTI-DEVICE RANDOMIZATION CONTROL

    • Lists every top-level device on the track in signal chain order, each with its own checkbox; unchecked devices have none of their parameters touched
    • Resets all device checkboxes to enabled automatically if the device lineup has changed since the dialog was last opened, so a saved selection never silently targets the wrong devices after you've edited the chain
    • Descends into Instrument Rack, Effect Rack, and Drum Rack chains with Rack Chains enabled, or stays at the rack's own top-level parameters with it off
    • Processes MIDI effects, instruments, and audio effects identically, with the same per-device and per-category rules applying across all three
    • Optionally protect Pitch / Tuning, Dry / Wet, and Volume / Gain / Output parameters from randomisation by default
    • Picks a random target within each eligible parameter's full range, then moves the parameter's current value a fraction of the way toward that target set by Amount

Amount works as both a one-shot full reset and a gradual nudge depending on where you set it, and that range is deliberate rather than something you'd want split into two separate controls. A single click at 100% is for when you want to throw a device's settings out entirely and see what comes back. Repeated clicks at 10-20% are for iterating gradually from a sound you already like, nudging it incrementally rather than risking losing the character you started with. Same control, same underlying math, two different working styles depending on the percentage.

Leaving Dry/Wet and Volume/Gain/Output protected by default is the detail that makes Variform usable as an exploratory tool rather than something you brace for before clicking. Randomising those parameters without restriction risks devices going silent or sudden, jarring level jumps, neither of which is musically interesting, both of which are just disruptive. Protecting them by default means you can explore a device's actual sonic character freely, and only reach for Pitch/Tuning when you specifically want melodic instability, since that's the one category where randomisation is more often genuinely disruptive on purpose.

    COMPLEMENT TO PRIMER

Variform and Primer share the same randomisation logic underneath, Amount-scaled deviation from a random target within a parameter's range, but solve different problems by design. Primer builds an entire session from nothing and randomises devices it's just created. Variform works on a track you've already built, with real devices in a real signal chain you want to preserve the identity of while exploring variation around it. Keeping the per-device and per-category protections specific to Variform, rather than folding both tools into one generalized randomiser, reflects that the two are answering "what should exist" versus "how should what already exists sound," genuinely different questions even when the underlying math is identical.
