Data Map is an Ableton Live Extension that converts real-world datasets into MIDI clips. Weather observations, financial statistics, seismic activity, geomagnetic readings, page-view counts, exchange rates, and your own CSV, image, or text files are all valid sources. Each data point maps to a musical parameter - pitch, velocity, note length, chance, rate, or chord voicing - so the structural patterns in the dataset become musical patterns in the resulting MIDI. The workflow runs in three steps inside Live: pick a data source in the Data Selector, shape how it’s mapped to MIDI in the Dashboard - then click Generate.

INTUITIVE DATA NAVIGATION

  • Pulls live and historical climate data from Open-Meteo, atmospheric data from NOAA and NASA, financial series from IMF, Yahoo Finance, Frankfurter FX, and CoinGecko, environmental data from USGS and NOAA tides, health indicators from WHO, and trend data from Wikipedia and Google Trends
  • Accepts your own CSV, TSV, image, or text files as an offline data source, with no internet connection required for that path
  • Maps any dataset to pitch, velocity, note length, chance, rate multiplier, rate divisor, and a binary gate filter
  • Adds up to seven additional chord voices on top of the primary pitch, each with a fixed or data-driven scale-degree offset
  • Controls density independently of the data itself with Sample (thinning) and Offset (which slice), and scales the whole rhythmic grid with Base Rate
  • Quantises every generated pitch, including chord voices, to Live's active scale and root note when Scale Aware is on
  • Targets either Session View or Arrangement View, placing the clip in the next available slot automatically

Every sonification parameter runs in either Range mode, where its value follows the data's contour between a min and max you set, or Fixed mode, where it ignores the data entirely. Pitch defaults to Range; everything else defaults to Fixed. That asymmetry reflects how people actually approach sonification: you almost always want the data driving pitch, but velocity, length, and rate are more often constants you dial in once the melodic shape is right, and only switch to data-driven when you specifically want the dataset's volatility or density to show up rhythmically too.

Unique and Legato exist because real-world data plateaus constantly: a week of stable temperatures, a flat trading range, a quiet stretch of seismic activity. Without some way to handle repetition, those stretches translate directly into repeated MIDI notes, which sound mechanical rather than musical. Giving Unique and Legato as opposite responses to the same problem, removing the repeat versus sustaining through it, means the choice of how a dataset's stillness should sound is yours, not a fixed behavior baked into the mapping engine.
FLEXIBLE CONTROLS

  • Sample thins or densifies the note grid by using every Nth data point, from 1 (every point) up to 100
  • Offset rotates which points within a Sample block get used, letting you explore different slices of the same dataset at the same density
  • Skip and Wait control what happens where Chance or Gate suppress a note: Skip shortens the clip by omitting that position, Wait inserts a rest and preserves the original rhythmic grid
  • Unique mutes any note that repeats the immediately preceding pitch, which keeps flat or plateaued stretches of data from producing static melodic lines
  • Legato merges consecutive same-pitch notes into one sustained note instead, the inverse strategy to Unique for the same problem
