SYNTH ANATOMY

Sonification Tools turn data of nearly any kind—numbers, text, images, video, camera feeds, or OSC streams—into directly playable musical material. Enter or paste values in Data or Text mode, drop images into Image mode, or feed in live video or OSC to generate MIDI patterns, modulation sequences, filter and distortion processes, impulse responses, exported waveforms, or even custom oscillators depending on the device. With Data MIDI and Data Mod, you can loop and map any dataset to a musical range, trigger it at metrical or millisecond rates, apply Euclidean sequencing, offsets, and swing, or use arbitrary MIDI input to drive the data. Video files, live camera input, and raw OSC streams expand this into a fully real-time creative system.

Custom trigger modes, scale-aware pitch output, and real-time control of pitch, velocity, and note-length ranges allow you to interpret your chosen data source in flexible, musical ways. Randomization introduces new patterns and textures instantly, while gating enables more complex rhythmic behavior based on thresholds. And on Live 12, Dataforge, Photomat, and Typewriter extend data, image, and text sonification directly into MIDI clips. Whether working with personally meaningful material or exploring found datasets, Sonification Tools let you embed real-world phenomena into your creative process, transforming data into expressive musical ideas.

“Artists have always used tools to make music. Whether that be a rock striking another rock, a mechanical metronome guiding the tempo, or a pulse generated arpeggiator endlessly playing a scale — these tools help us create art and perform in new ways. Noah Pred's work with Manifest Audio is born from this passion of using tools to help artists grow and evolve. His creations have allowed me to create art in ways I never would have imagined possible before their release. A great tool doesn't do the work for you, but is an extension of you. It relies on what you already know, but then takes you to places you don't know. Ultimately, the user is responsible for that final push toward a complete and finalized piece of art. Art born from the intimate relationship between an artist and their tools.”
Matthew Dear, Ghostly International

“Just had a play, mainly with Data MIDI and Data Mod. Overall it's great and I would definitely recommend it. The text to sound function is good for coming up with interesting, rhythmic-sounding patterns. The video to sound function I love. Using Data Mod you can map the brightness of the video to any parameter you want - up to eight parameters in total. I used my laptop camera as an input and had a lot of fun covering and uncovering the lens with a book to make sounds that were higher or lower, darker or brighter. You can use the image to sound function to scroll up/down or left/right over an image and sonify it ... for small datasets, it's a gamechanger — it's very powerful and makes it very quick and easy to get incredible sounds with no code.” — Miriam Quick, Loud Numbers
Not sure what data to use? Sites like Our World In Data are a great place to start. You can also type in personally meaningful numbers — or an arbitrary string of data can also be randomized from scratch within each device to easily generate infinite sequences, patterns, and tones. A groundbreaking set of tools for artists and producers, our Sonification Tools allow you to embed real-world phenomena into your creative process — and express those phenomena as uniquely as you wish, giving them a voice through your music, and inspiring newly meaningful approaches in the process.
