 Designed by Ableton Certified Trainer Noah Pred to enhance harmonic coherence and provide new approaches to signal processing while enabling interactions between otherwise unrelated musical elements, X-FX is comprised of twelve unique Max for Live audio effects. Devices can be driven melodically via MIDI notes or X-Relay, letting you shape filtering, resonance, modulation, delay, dynamics, and harmonization in direct response to musical pitch. With full scale awareness in Live 12 and flexible, polyrhythmic timing  options, X-FX makes it easy to create harmonically tuned filters, resonators, FM textures, and tempo-locked spatial effects that react musically to your project.

A unified threshold and crossover input section lets you apply processing only when the signal exceeds (or falls below) a defined amplitude or frequency, making it easy to accent transients, carve frequency-dependent motion, or trigger effects selectively for cleaner, more intentional results. The output stage adds its own threshold-based interpolation mode, switching between dry and wet states whenever the input crosses the boundary for expressive, performance-ready contrast. Combined with routing tools, tuned filters, resonation, FM, distortion, harmonic processing, time-based effects, and deep modulation, X-FX forms a flexible, musical sound-design environment for shaping interactions between elements across your entire mix.

Extreme feedback and distortion can be explored safely with optional limiting, while routing tools like X-Connect and X-Divide expand signal flow, and integrated modulation from Mod Squad Free enables deep movement and automation. The result is a unified toolkit for harmonic sound design that helps unrelated elements interact, evolve, and lock together in ways traditional audio effects can’t achieve. CREATIVE PUNCTUATION: The input threshold control on all X-FX allows you to apply effects only to signal above (or, optionally, below) a specified amplitude. Only want to delay, reverberate, or tame signal above certain peaks? This is the parameter to explore. Switch to crossover mode to only apply effects when signal is above (or, optionally, below) a specified frequency. Ultimate flexibility for enhanced creativity.

HARMONIC COHERENCE: All X-FX can be constrained to one of 69 scales in any key. By default, this will be set by Live 12's scale and key, or with Live 11 and older, an instance of the included Global Hub utility - but can also be pinned locally on a per-device basis, allowing you to explore diatonic musical expressions of previously chromatic effects.

INNOVATIVE INTERPOLATION: In addition to standard dry/wet balance, the unique interpolate mode works in tandem with the input threshold to only trigger the current wet effect amount when signal exceeds the specified threshold or crossover, resulting in truly dynamic processing.
MIDI PLAYABLE: First, place the included X-Relay utility on any MIDI source track, switch it to Relay mode, and select a conduit. Then set your target X-FX to Relay mode and set it to receive on the same conduit. Voila! Now you can play your effect via MIDI, within the selected scale and key, and with optional transposition. Better yet, you can flip the incoming Relay signal to invert the notes on the keyboard for instant counterpoint. Or, set a delay on the source X-Relay instance to induce call and response. The possibilities are truly endless.

FLEXIBLE GAIN-STAGING: Every device has input and output gain controls with a wide range to boost or attenuate as needed to keep your signal at optimal levels regardless of effect processing.

SYSTEMIC INTEGRATION: As described above, X-FX fits neatly with our Global Hub and X-Relay utilities as well as Live 12's scale awareness and MIDI routing, creating an integrated musical ecosystem that expands the possible to new realms.OUTPUT LIMITING: All X-FX have built-in output limiting enabled by default so you can experiment with extreme feedback and other settings without concern for damage.
